I love to exercise, but I’m actually not the biggest fan of going to the gym to work out. One, because I feel like people will make silently judge me if I look like I’m doing something wrong, and two, because I feel like I don’t have full freedom to do whatever I want.
Going to the gym everyday can get monotonous. Especially in the winter, when you don’t really have a choice but to drag yourself to the gym with three layers on.
Here’s a list of ways to exercise without going near the gym.
Go for a run outside. I do this at least twice a week to get a change of scenery. It gets harder in the winter, especially since I hate being cold, but sometimes you just need to get out and go for a run, even if it is snowing. A good way to motivate yourself is to sign up for a fun road race to look forward to!
Get involved in intramurals. If you’re a college student, a great way to get your heart rate up at least once a week is by joining an intramural team. It’ll keep you motivated, since there will be others to keep you on track, and it’s way more fun than lifting weights (at least that’s what I think).
Go for a bike ride. And I don’t mean jump on the stationary bike at the gym. Pull your bike out from the garage or wherever, wipe the dust off of it and go somewhere. Remember, every four miles you bike roughly equals one mile of running (but the faster you go, the more your body will work).
Go hiking. I love forests, so hiking is always at the top of my list of fun things to do. Sadly, in Iowa there aren’t a whole lot of places to do that, but I try to when I get a chance! It’s always nice to get a day outside to explore, and away from your normal schedule.
Go for a walk. If you’re not feeling like really doing some serious exercise, going for a walk is always a good idea. As long as you’re moving is all that matters. Take in the scenery and breathe in the fresh air.

Take your weights and mat outdoors. If you love lifting weights and can’t bear to part with your daily gym work out, take it outside if you can. It breaks up the monotony of going to the gym everyday.
Do you have any other ideas of how to get your heart pumping outside of the gym? Let me know in the comments!
