I love to travel, but I don’t have the means to go all of these faraway destinations all the time. Living in the suburbs during my summer breaks at home gets repetitive, since there’s not a whole lot to do. But I am fortunate to live in an area where there are a couple of places to spend a nice weekend. I’ve rounded up a few places, some that I’ve been to, and some that I’ve heard of as being good weekend spots.
St. Joseph’s, Michigan – I’ve been here a couple of times, and I love it. I’ve never actually stayed overnight because it makes for a good day trip as well. But it’s good for a relaxed weekend at Silver Beach, or walking around the downtown area. It’s usually pretty crowded during the summer, and for good reason. The sunsets here are amazing too.
Check out: Silver Beach Pizza, Silver Beach, RyeBelles Restaurant and Bar.
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore – Another nice place to relax on the beach for a weekend. I’ve only taken a day trip here, so it’s definitely doable in a day (if the drive isn’t too long). I’ve heard people sometimes go camping here too, if that’s your thing.
Check out: Bartlett’s Gourmet Grill and Tavern.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin – I have family that lives by Milwaukee, and even though it’s been a while since I’ve been to the actual city, it makes for a good weekend spot as well, especially if you’re looking more for a nightlife scene.
Check out: Milwaukee Art Museum, The Outsider bar, Dandan restaurant.
Madison, Wisconsin – Another fun nightlife scene, I just visited Madison in April and had a great time. Beware that the farmers market on Saturday mornings only moves in one direction, though. Depending on where you are, this might be a farther drive.
Check out: Farmers market, Double U bar (mostly college-aged people at this one though), Colectivo Coffee.

Grand Haven, Michigan – I’ve never been here, but it’s a popular destination, and definitely doable within a weekend.
Check out: The boardwalk, Grand Haven State Park (beaches).
Hopefully this helps you make some decisions on summer travel this year!
