Improving your morning routine

I’m not a morning person. I’ve done the whole waking up last minute thing plenty of times. So trying to become better at this whole morning thing has been quite a challenge.

I’m trying to be more of a morning person because this is usually when I feel the most productive. I have a love/hate relationship with sleeping in because I love getting more sleep, but I hate feeling like I wasted my morning. So this is me figuring out what works for me in the morning, and what I’m hoping to get done. And hopefully it helps you figure out your morning routine as well.

Exercise. I’m used to waking up to work out before class. I did it pretty much every morning last year, and it’s usually one of the most important parts of my day. I especially love running in the early morning hours (I also love night running). I prefer morning work outs over evening ones, because that way I get it out of the way and don’t have to worry about it.

Drink water. This is something recent I’ve been trying to do. As soon as I wake up, I drink some water. I have coffee every morning, and it wasn’t uncommon for me to not start drinking water until later in the day. Probably not a good thing. So now it’s one of the first things I do when I wake up.

Make the bed. I used to be kind of crazy about making my bed when I was younger, and would have to do it every morning before doing anything else. When I got to college and had to sleep in a lofted bed, it became harder to actually make my bed nicely, so I started to drift away from doing it every morning. But I am back to my old (and cleaner) ways, and I gotta say, it does make me feel a little more put together in the morning.

Eat breakfast. Okay, I know not everyone has an appetite in the morning. But I have to eat something in the morning, otherwise I’ll start to feel sick later on. Even something small helps. You can’t just survive on coffee in the morning.

Shower/get ready. Obviously if you worked out in the morning, you should probably shower. Even if you didn’t, showers are a great way to feel refreshed in the morning.

Give yourself enough time. I’m a master of getting up at the last possible minute, and getting ready in a record amount of time to make it to class or work. In the last year or so, I’ve been working on waking up at an early enough time to get everything done that I want to do, without having to skip putting on makeup or my morning run.

  1. This looks like a really great morning routine! I do very similar things to you and it really helps me feel more productive. Drinking water especially helps me feel so much better as the day goes on. I take mine with some lemon before my workout to help boost my metabolism.
